Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) is observed in April nationally. The purpose of Sexual Assault Awareness Month is to increase the public's understanding about sexual violence in our society. Sexual violence means enormous physical and psychological consequences for victims and their families. It can damage one’s sense of safety in the world, self-esteem, educational development and later, the ability to be a productive citizen.
This is the month to unite in our efforts to raise awareness and prevent sexual violence. Recognizing Sexual Assault Awareness Month each year highlights sexual violence as a major public health problem. According to the “Rape in Arkansas Report” of the more than one million women living in Arkansas, nearly 129,000 or approximately 12.4% have been victims of a completed forcible rape at some point in their lifetime (National Violence Against Women Prevention Research Center). However, this is mostly likely a very conservative estimate because it does not include men, children or other forms of sexual violence. For the full report, click here.
The 2007 SAAM national campaign slogan is: Prevent Sexual Violence… in our workplaces. Designed to help employers recognize the vital role workplace culture plays in the prevention of sexual violence, this theme promotes a healthy work environment.
Agencies across the state of Arkansas are doing their part to shed light on this important issue and will hold events in honor of Sexual Assault Awareness Month. For a list of events, click here. It is also a time to encourage the public to get involved and take steps to address sexual violence.
